And if wooden cabinets are a little too ‘old school’ (or expensive) for you, maybe melamine or thermofil is more your style?
Below we discuss some of the more popular choices available to you, to try to make your decision that little bit easier…
Hickory will give you a sophisticated and totally unique look, and is perfect for someone who wants ‘one of a kind’ cabinets. It is a little more expensive than some other timbers, but makes up for that fact with the exquisite finish it offers. Hickory is one of the most durable of timbers used in cabinet designs, so will ideally suit the entertainer who enjoys cooking often.
A high moisture resistant plywood bonded both sides with white high pressure laminate. Rhino Ply is ideal for use in area where moisture is present, for example, bathrooms, laundry’s, alfresco kitchens, etc.
Prolight & Corelight
Prolight and Corelight are both lightweight rigid foam panels that are carefully manufactured for colour & consistency. Prolight is ideal in wet & damp conditions.
Melamine cabinets give you great flexibility at an affordable price. Melamine comes in a large range of colours and can be dressed up with fittings that can be replaced at a later time to give a new fresh look. Melamine also has its downsides of course, such as if water penetrates the seal the internal board will swell causing unrepairable damage. But overall it is highly durable and continues to be a popular choice for the budget conscious.
Two Pack Polyurethane Cabinets
Two Pack Polyurethane is a very popular choice that gives you a seamless cabinet look that offers a glossy lustre that reflects light and enhances the space around it. Be aware though that It is a surface that you will want to respect as it is prone to chipping and small damage if not handled with care.
Generally used in commercial kitchens, metal has now found a place in the ultra-contemporary home. It offers very clean lines that enhance a minimalistic style and is hard wearing and durable. Knocks, bumps and surface scratches are to be expected with this product, however many feel that this does not negatively impact the presentation, but rather just add to its uniqueness.
Laminate cabinets are a long time favourite with home owners because of their affordability. But cost is not the only reason to chose this durable surface, as installing laminate cabinets gives your kitchen or bathroom a sleek, stylish and modern look. Advances in laminate manufacturing now afford buyers a vast array of styles, colours and textures. Time was a laminate cabinet came in ‘white’ or ‘white’. But now the choices are legion, and also include a high-gloss finish which is manufactured under a rigid thermal foil (RTF) process for added durability and strength.
